In creative arts, students discover a variety of visual and performing art forms through a study of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

Through studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements and concepts as well as a capacity to inspire, problem solve and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both Music and Visual Arts during Stage 4. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects in Stage 5 including Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Dance, Photography and Visual Design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.

The Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Faculty at NVHS has a proud history of academic and cultural success, and provides many opportunities for our students to experience extracurricular extension.

Year 9 AND Year 11 2022

CAPA Program

The Creative and Performing Arts Program at Narara Valley High School is a vibrant part of our school, offering experiences within and beyond the classroom. In each area of CAPA we aim to give students opportunities to develop their creative talents through Dance, Visual Arts, Music and Drama.

Historically students from the CAPA classes have gone on to perform in prestigious events such as Encore, Reprise, Central Vision, Call Back, YIPA, Showcase, CC Dance Festival, Talent Development Program, State Vocal camp, Operation Art, Art Express to name a few. Other students have recording contracts and many have achieved band 6 and 5 results in their HSC CAPA subjects. We are very proud of what many of these students have been able to achieve in their selected areas.

The program provides students with the opportunity to acquire life long skills, knowledge and understanding that are necessary for active engagement and enjoyment in the Creative and Performing Arts areas of their choice, while continuing to engage in all other areas of their school education.

The areas are Visual Arts, Dance, Drama and Music students can select vocals, instrumental, guitar, piano, and sound production.

The CAPA class students of Year 7 and 8 will do two one hour tutorials in their two chosen areas that are determined from the audition process. The CAPA class are given opportunities throughout the year to perform at regional and local community and performing Arts events as well as invited to participate in exhibitions and competitions.

NB: There is a cost associated with CAPA of $500 per year. This is to pay our tutors, cover the cost of excursions and resources for our students. Payment plans can be negotiated with administration staff.

NVHS Concert Band

Narara Valley High School is pleased to announce the reintroduction of our popular Concert Band program in Term 1 2022.

Directed by experienced conductor and director Mr Mitch Lowe and coordinated by Mr Ben Ross, The NVHS Concert Band are a dedicated ensemble of musicians who rehearse weekly on a wide variety of concert band music. We share a love of music and a desire to share this interest with our community by enriching the community culture through performance.

The repertoire of the band includes a wide variety of musical genres that would appeal to any age group, from Classical to popular tunes, including movie themes, jazz, big band, show music, military marches, as well as the compositions of local composers.

The band's members span from years 7-12, and we are always looking for new members to come and join us. The band meets weekly on Monday afternoon from 2:30pm to 4:30pm in the Performance Space. New members of all experience levels are always welcome!

Band fees are generally $125 per term and cover the cost of tuition, repertoire and resources.

Please feel free to contact Mr Ross in the CAPA Staffroom for more information, or email Ben.Ross21@det.nsw.edu.au
