Science
The Science Faculty at Narara Valley High School is committed to developing students’ curiosity, scientific understanding and ability to engage with the world around them. Through engaging, practical and inquiry-based learning, students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate problems, analyse evidence and develop the skills needed to think scientifically.
Stage 4 Science (Years 7 & 8)
In Stage 4, all students study Science as part of their core curriculum. Students are introduced to a broad range of scientific concepts across the physical, chemical, biological and Earth and environmental sciences. Practical investigations, experiments and hands-on activities form an important part of learning, allowing students to develop their skills in working scientifically while building a strong foundation for future study.
Year 7 students are currently taught Science through the Measuring Physical Sciences (MPS) course, delivered by the Teaching and Learning (TAL) Faculty. In 2026, Year 7 students commenced learning from the new NSW Science syllabus as part of the statewide curriculum reform. In 2027, the new syllabus will continue to be rolled out with Year 8 students, who are taught Science by the Science Faculty. This will provide a consistent and progressive transition into the new Stage 4 Science curriculum, with students developing their scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills as they progress through Years 7 and 8.
Stage 5 Science (Years 9 & 10)
In Stage 5, students continue to develop their scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills through the core Science curriculum, with increasing opportunities to investigate real-world scientific issues, apply scientific concepts and develop practical investigation skills.
In line with the statewide curriculum reform, Year 9 students commenced learning from the new NSW Science syllabus in 2026, with the rollout continuing in 2027 when the new syllabus is introduced to Year 10. The updated curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing students' ability to work scientifically, investigate questions, analyse and interpret evidence, and apply scientific understanding to contemporary issues and real-world contexts.
Students can also extend their learning through Marine and Aquaculture Technology, a popular Stage 5 elective that provides students with opportunities to explore marine environments, aquatic ecosystems, aquaculture, sustainability and marine industries. Offered as either a 100-hour or 200-hour course, the subject combines classroom learning with practical experiences, fieldwork and hands-on activities, allowing students to apply their knowledge in authentic marine and environmental contexts. Students participate in a range of exciting experiences and excursions throughout the course, including Learn to Surf, snorkelling, fishing and Marine Camp. The elective provides an excellent pathway for students interested in continuing their studies in Marine Studies, environmental science and other STEM-related fields in Stage 6 and beyond.
Stage 6 Science (Years 11 & 12)
Narara Valley High School offers an extensive range of Stage 6 Science courses, providing pathways for students with a wide variety of interests, abilities and future aspirations.
Students can choose from:
- Biology – exploring living organisms, biodiversity, genetics, evolution and the interactions between organisms and their environments.
- Chemistry – investigating matter, chemical reactions, energy and the applications of chemistry in the world around us.
- Earth and Environmental Science – examining Earth systems, geological processes, natural resources and environmental challenges.
- Investigating Science – developing students' understanding of scientific inquiry, research methodologies, evidence and the processes scientists use to investigate real-world problems.
- Marine Studies – providing students with opportunities to develop practical knowledge and skills related to marine environments, marine industries and aquatic activities.
- Physics – exploring the fundamental principles that underpin the physical world, including motion, forces, energy, waves, electricity and modern physics.
This breadth of Stage 6 offerings enables students to pursue their individual interests while preparing for further education, training and careers across science, medicine, engineering, environmental science, marine industries and many other fields.
