Human Society and Its Environment

The HSIE Faculty offers a diverse range of subjects that inspire students to understand the world around them, explore the past and engage with issues shaping our future. From Geography and History Stage 4 to Aboriginal Studies, Commerce, Geography and History in Stage 5, students develop strong skills in critical thinking, research, communication and understanding different perspectives.

Through the study of History, students investigate how people, events and decisions have shaped our world, developing an understanding of Australia’s diverse histories and a stronger sense of identity and citizenship. Through the study of Geography, students develop curiosity about people, places and environments, while building practical skills in fieldwork, research, sustainability to further broaden their understanding of the world and their place within it.

In Stage 6, students can pursue their interests through the study of Aboriginal Studies, Ancient History, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History Extension (Year 12 only), Legal Studies, Modern History, Society and Culture and Studies of Religion. These subjects develop valuable skills in analysis, problem-solving, decision-making and communication, while providing pathways for further study, employment and active citizenship.

HSIE students’ learning extends beyond the classroom through engaging, hands-on experiences such as the Tut Roadshow, World War I Display, Aboriginal Survival Techniques presentation and fieldwork. Students studying HSIE also have opportunities to deepen their understanding through museum visits and powerful first-hand testimonies from Holocaust and Stolen Generations survivors. These enriching experiences bring learning to life, connecting students with authentic people, places and historical evidence, while making their learning meaningful, memorable and engaging.
